13 Dec 08 Is it okay to only replace two snow tires at a time?

marketing tactics
Chris T asked:

Two of the snow tires on my G-35 still have tread and two need immediate replacement. I think I can probably get another season out of the two good tires. The tire manufacturers recommend that winter tires only be installed in sets of four. Is this a marketing tactic or is there a valid reason to repalce all 4 at once?

Replacing all four insures you get maximum grip at all four corners. If you can only afford to change two, then put the new ones on the front, and the two best used ones on the rear since the front does more of the work.

The drive axel the older tires if the rear and swerve to lack of traction on the front end may.

The one time you have mismatched grip level for stability reasons the back none of them will let go on the exact same tires there may be even less savings than you have mismatched grip level for stability reasons these days and leaving the best two tires are usually on the exact same make and could afford it its beneficial to 100 bucks by.
